| And that in his words and tones he keep far from lowness and impropriety. |

| Men differ from one another in regard to them - some as much again as others, some five times as much, and some to an incalculable amount - it is because they cannot carry out fully their natural powers. |
| 《·》: | 曰：加隆焉爾也，焉使倍之，故再期也。 |
| The answer is - From the wish to make it greater and more impressive, the time is doubled, and so embraces two round years. |
| 《》: | 曰：「藺相如申秦而屈廉頗，欒布之不倍，朱家之不德，直不疑之不校，韓安國之通使。」 |
| Yangzi said: Lin Ziangru acting as emissary to Qin and yielding to Lian Po; Luan Bu not changing his mind; Zhu Jia not seeking a reward; Zhi Buyi not correcting accusations against him; and Han Anguo being a envoy throughout the empire. |
| 《·》: | 孔門弟子七十之徒，皆任卿相之用，被服聖教，文才雕琢，知能十倍，教訓之功而漸漬之力也。 |
| The seventy disciples of the school of Confucius were each of them able to creditably fill the post of a minister of state. Conforming to the holy doctrines, they became accomplished scholars, and their knowledge and skill grew tenfold. This was the result of teaching; thus latent faculties were gradually developed. |

| Bei (doubling) is making two of them. |
| 《·》: | 是遁天倍情，忘其所受，古者謂之遁天之刑。 |
| And this was a hiding from himself of his Heaven (-nature), and an excessive indulgence of his (human) feelings; a forgetting of what he had received (in being born); what the ancients called the punishment due to neglecting the Heaven (-nature). |
| 《》: | 絕聖棄智，民利百倍。 |
| If we could renounce our sageness and discard our wisdom, it would be better for the people a hundredfold. |
| 《·》: | 壹山澤，則惡農慢惰倍欲之民無所於食。 |
| If mountains and moors are brought into one hand, then the people who hate agriculture, the tardy and lazy and those who desire double profit, will have no means of subsistence. |
| 《·》: | 故用兵之法，十則圍之，五則攻之，倍則分之，敵則能戰之，少則能守之，不若則能避之。 |
| It is the rule in war, if our forces are ten to the enemy's one, to surround him; if five to one, to attack him; if twice as numerous, to divide our army into two. If equally matched, we can offer battle; if slightly inferior in numbers, we can avoid the enemy; if quite unequal in every way, we can flee from him. |
