薛元超（622年 - 683年），名振，以字行，唐蒲州汾陽（今山西萬榮縣西南）人。祖父為隋朝薛道衡。父薛收，唐初為秦王記室參軍，不幸早逝。薛元超生于武德六年（623年），六歲襲爵汾陰男。善于文辭，太宗甚重之，娶李元吉之女和靜縣主為妻，累授太子舍人，參修《晉書》。唐高宗即位，遷紿事中，時年二十六歲。不久轉任中書舍人，加弘文館學士，兼修國史。麟德元年（664年）在簡州刺史任上曾因與獲罪宰相上官儀私下書信來往被長流巂州。薛元超晚年自稱一生中有三大遺憾：「不以進士擢第」，沒能娶「五姓女」，不得修國史。卒于光宅元年（684年）。
