抱朴子曰:「道書之出於黃老者,蓋少許耳,率多後世之好事者,各以所知見而滋長,遂令篇卷至於山積。古人質朴,又多無才,其所論物理,既不周悉,其所證按,又不著明,皆闕所要而難解,解之又不深遠,不足以演暢微言,開示憤悱,勸進有志,教戒始學,令知玄妙之塗徑,禍福之源流也。徒誦之萬遍,殊無可得也。雖欲博涉,然宜詳擇其善者,而後留意,至於不要之道書,不足尋繹也。末學者或不別作者之淺深,其於名為道家之言,便寫取累箱盈筐,盡心思索其中。是探燕巢而求鳳卵,搜井底而捕鱔魚,雖加至勤,非其所有也,不得必可施用,無故消棄日月,空有疲困之勞,了無錙銖之益也。進失當世之務,退無長生之效,則莫不指點之曰,彼修道如此之勤,而不得度世,是天下果無不死之法也;而不知彼之求仙,猶臨河羡魚,而無網罟,非河中之無魚也。又五千文雖出老子,然皆泛論較略耳。其中了不肯首尾全舉其事,有可承按者也。但暗誦此經,而不得要道,直為徒勞耳,又況不及者乎?至於文子莊子關令尹喜之徒,其屬文筆,雖祖述黃老,憲章玄虛,但演其大旨,永無至言。或復齊死生,謂無異以存活為徭役,以殂歿為休息,其去神仙,已千億裏矣,豈足耽玩哉?其寓言譬喻,猶有可採,以供給碎用,充禦卒乏,至使末世利口之奸佞,無行之弊子,得以老莊為窟藪,不亦惜乎?」
