18 曲礼上:
为人子者,居不主奥,坐不中席,行不中道,立不中门。食飨不为概,祭祀不为尸。听于无声,视于无形。不登高,不临深。不茍訾,不茍笑。
Qu Li I:
A son should not occupy the south-west corner of the apartment, nor sit in the middle of the mat (which he occupies alone), nor walk in the middle of the road, nor stand in the middle of the doorway. He should not take the part of regulating the (quantity of) rice and other viands at an entertainment. He should not act as personator of the dead at sacrifice. He should be (as if he were) hearing (his parents) when there is no voice from them, and as seeing them when they are not actually there. He should not ascend a height, nor approach the verge of a depth; he should not indulge in reckless reviling or derisive laughing.

齐桓公与管仲谋伐莒,谋未发而闻于国。桓公怪之,以问管仲。管仲曰:“国必有圣人也。”桓公叹曰:“歖!日之役者,有执柘杵而上视者,意其是邪!”乃令复役,无得相代。少焉,东郭垂至。管仲曰:“此必是也。”乃令傧者延而进之,分级而立。管仲曰:“子言伐莒者也?”对曰:“然。”管仲曰:“我不言伐莒,子何故言伐莒?”对曰:“臣闻君子善谋,小人善意,臣窃意之也。”管仲曰:“我不言伐莒,子何以意之?”对曰:“臣闻君子有三色:优然喜乐者,钟鼓之色;愀然清净者,縗绖之色;勃然充满者,此兵革之色也。日者,臣望君之在台上也,勃然充满,此兵革之色也,君吁而不吟,所言者莒也,君举臂而指所当者莒也。臣窃虑小诸侯之未服者,其惟莒乎?臣故言之。”君子曰:“凡耳之闻,以声也。今不闻其声而以其容与臂,是东郭垂不以耳听而闻也。桓公、管仲虽善谋,不能隐圣人之听于无声,视于无形,东郭垂有之矣。故桓公乃尊禄而礼之。”

椎固有柄,不能自椓;目见百步之外,不能自见其眦。狗彘不择甂瓯而食,偷肥其体而顾近其死。凤皇高翔千仞之上,故莫之能致。月照天下,蚀于詹诸。腾蛇游雾,而殆于蝍蛆。鸟力胜日,而服于鵻礼,能有修短也。莫寿于殇子,而彭祖为夭矣。短绠不可以汲深,器小不可以盛大,非其任也。怒出于不怒,为出于不为。视于无形,则得其所见矣;听于无声,则得其所闻矣。至味不慊,至言不文,至乐不笑,至音不叫,大匠不斫,大豆不具,大勇不斗,得道而德从之矣。譬若黄锺之比宫,太簇之比商,无更调焉。以瓦鉒者全,以金鉒者跋,以玉鉒者发,是故所重者在外,则内为之掘。逐兽者目不见太山,嗜欲在外,则明所蔽矣。听有音之音者聋,听无音之音者聪;不聋不聪,与神明通。
