55 曲礼上:
父母有疾,冠者不栉,行不翔,言不惰,琴瑟不御,食肉不至变味,饮酒不至变貌,笑不至矧,怒不至詈。疾止复故。
Qu Li I:
When his father or mother is ill, (a young man) who has been capped should not use his comb, nor walk with his elbows stuck out, nor speak on idle topics, nor take his lute or cithern in hand. He should not eat of (different) meats till his taste is changed, nor drink till his looks are changed'. He should not laugh so as to show his teeth, nor be angry till he breaks forth in reviling. When the illness is gone, he may resume his former habits.

丧有病得饮酒食肉何?所以辅人生己,重先祖遗支体也。故《曲礼》曰:“居丧之礼,头有疮则沐,身有疡则浴,有疾则饮酒食肉。五十不致毁,七十唯衰麻在身,饮酒食肉。”又曰:“父母有疾,食肉不至变味,饮酒不至变貌,笑不至矧,怒不至詈,琴瑟不御。”《曾子问》曰:“三年之丧,练不群立,不旅行,礼以饰情。三年之丧而吊哭,不亦虚乎!”《礼檀弓》曰:“曾子有母之丧,吊子张。”子张者,朋友,有服,虽重服吊之,可也。《曾子问》曰:“小功可以与祭乎?孔子曰:‘斩衰已下,与祭,礼也。’”此谓君丧然也。子夏问:“三年之丧,既卒哭,金革之事无避者,礼与?”孔子曰:“吾闻诸老聃曰:‘周公伯禽,则有为之也。’今以三年之丧从其利者,吾不知也。”

《家语》曰:孔子谓宓子贱曰:“子治单父,众悦,何施而得之?”对曰:“此地民有贤于不齐者,不齐事之,事而禀度焉,皆教不齐以治道。”孔子叹曰:“昔尧舜听天下务求贤以自辅,夫贤人,百福之宗,神明之主也。惜乎!不齐之所治小也。”
又曰:子夏问于孔子曰:“颜回之为人奚若?”子曰:“回之信贤于丘。”曰:“子贡之为人奚若?”子曰:“赐之敏贤于丘。”曰:“子路之为人奚若?”子曰:“由之勇贤于丘。”曰:“子张之为人奚若?”子曰:“师之庄贤于丘。”子夏避席而问曰:“然则,四子者何为事先生?”子曰:“居,吾语汝!夫回能信而不能反,反,谓反信也。君子言不必信,惟义所在也。赐能敏而不能诎,诎,人惟辩敏,亦宜有折屈时也。由能勇而不能怯,师能庄而不能同。言人虽务□庄,亦当有和同时也。兼四子者之有以易吾,吾弗与也。此其所以事吾而不及也。”
又曰:孔子读史至楚复陈,夏徵舒杀其君,楚庄王讨之,取陈而有之,申叔时谏庄王,庄王从之,乃复陈国也。喟然曰:“贤哉,楚庄王!轻千乘之国而重一言之信,非申叔时之忠,弗能建其义。非庄王之贤,弗能受其训。”
又曰:所谓贤者,德不逾闲,闲,法。行中规绳。
又曰:哀公问于孔子曰:“当今之君,孰者最贤?”孔子对曰:“丘未之见,抑有卫灵公乎?”公曰:“吾闻其闺门之内无别,而子次之贤,何也?”孔子对曰:“臣论其朝廷行事,不论其私家之际也。”公曰:“其事何也?”孔子曰:灵公之弟曰公子渠,牟其知足以治千乘,其信足以守之,灵公爱而任之。又有士曰王林者,见贤必进之,而退与分其禄,是以卫国无游放之才,灵公知而尊之。又有士曰庆足者,国有大事则必起而治之,国无事则退客贤,言其所以退,欲以容贤与朝。灵公悦而敬之。又有大夫史鱿,以道去,卫灵公郊舍三日,琴瑟不御,必待史鱿之入而后敢入。臣以此取之难,次之贤,不亦可乎!“
