Qu Li I:
They are the rules of propriety, that furnish the means of determining (the observances towards) relatives, as near and remote; of settling points which may cause suspicion or doubt; of distinguishing where there should be agreement, and where difference; and of making clear what is right and what is wrong.

夫形者,生之所也;气者,生之元也;神者,生之制也。一失位,则三者伤矣。是故圣人使人各处其位,守其职,而不得相干也。故夫形者非其所安也而处之则废,气不当其所充而用之则泄,神非其所宜而行之则昧。此三者,不可不慎守也。夫举天下万物,蚑蛲贞虫,蠕动蚑作,皆知其喜憎利害者,何也?以其性之在焉而不离也。忽去之,则骨肉无伦矣。今人之所以眭然能视,䁝然能听,形体能抗,而百节可屈伸,察能分白黑、视丑美,而知能别同异、明是非者,何也?气为之充而神为之使也。何以知其然也?凡人之志,各有所在,而神有所系者,其行也,足蹪趎堋、头抵植木而不自知也,招之而不能见也,呼之而不能闻也。耳目非去之也,然而不能应者,何也?神失其守也。故在于小则忘于大,在于中则忘于外,在于上则忘于下,在于左则忘于右;无所不充,则无所不在。是故贵虚者,以毫末为宅也。

《礼记》曰:礼也者,体也。礼不备,谓之不成人。
又曰:夫礼者,所以定亲疏,决嫌疑,别同异,明是非也。道德仁义,非礼不成,教训正俗,非礼不备,分争辩讼,非礼不决,君臣上下,父子兄弟,非礼不定。
又曰:夫礼,先王以承天之道,以治人之情,故失之者死,得之者生,诗云,相鼠有体,人而无礼,人而无礼,胡不遄死。言偃复问曰:夫子之极言礼也。可得而闻与。孔子曰:我欲观夏道,是故之杞而不足徵也。吾得夏时焉。我欲观殷道,是故之宋而不足徵也。吾得坤乾焉。
又曰:故人情者,圣王之田也。修礼以耕之,陈义以种之,讲学以耨之,本仁以聚之,播乐以安之。
又曰:礼其在人也。如竹箭之有筠也。如松柏之有心也。二者居天下之大端也。贯四时,不改柯易叶。
又曰:夫礼本于太一,分而为天地,转而为阴阳,变而为四时,列而为鬼神。
