1  | 閒居無事，翻書度日；而資性粗鈍，不能研究經學，惟歷代史書，事顯而義淺，便於流覽，爰取為日課。有所得，輙劄記別紙，積久遂多。惟是家少藏書，不能繁徵博採，以資叅訂。間有裨乘脞說，與正史岐互者，又不敢遽詫為得間之奇。葢一代修史時，此等記載，無不蒐入史局，其所棄而不取者，必有難以徵信之處。今或反據以駁正史之訛，不免貽譏有識。是以此編多就正史紀傳表志中，叅互勘校，其有牴牾處自見，輙摘出以俟博雅君子訂正焉。至古今風會之遞變，政事之屢更，有關於治亂興衰之故者，亦隨所見附著之。自惟中歲歸田，遭時承平，得優游林下，寢饋於文史以送老，書生之幸多矣！或以比顧亭林《日知錄》，謂身雖不仕，而其言有可用者，則吾豈敢。陽湖趙翼謹識
