東方朔字曼倩，平原厭次人，武帝時，上書稱㫖，待詔金馬門。建元中，以諌營上林苑，拜為太中大夫。帝為竇太主，置酒宣室，使引內董偃朔、陳偃有斬罪三，不得入宣室，帝善之，時天下侈靡，百姓多離農，畞朔，陳孝文節儉，諷帝燔甲乙之帳，却走馬，示不復用，又陳農戰强國之計，朔指意放蕩，喜詼諧然，常觀察顔色，直言切諌，上雅納之。著有客難及非有先生論，世多以神仙目之，又詳仙釋。
