陳祖范,字亦韓,亦字見復,常熟人。雍正癸卯舉人,未及殿試。乾隆辛未,薦舉經學,特賜國子監司業銜。著有《經咫》一卷,皆其說經之文。名「經咫」者,用《國語》「晉文公咫聞」語也。祖范膺薦時,曾錄呈御覽,此其門人歸宣光等所刊,凡《易》七條,《書》十二條,《詩》七條,《春秋》十三條,《禮》六條,《論語》十三條,《中庸》二條,《孟子》十條,而以雜文之有關禮義者八篇,列於《禮》後。其論《書》不取梅賾,論《詩》不廢小序,論《春秋》不取義例,論《禮》不以古制違人情,皆通達之論。原序稱「文不離乎《六經》、《四書》,說不參乎支離怪僻」,視蕭山毛奇齡之專攻前人者,同一說經,而純駁顯然。試觀其書,如駁《公羊傳》弟為兄後之說,而取其母以子貴之文,駁婚禮不告廟之非,《論語》無所取材,主鄭康成桴材之說,謂寧武子不及仕衛文公,謂瓜祭非必祭,及政逮大夫四世之類,取奇齡說者不一而足,惟《古文尚書》顯然立異耳。祖范學問篤實,必非剽取人書者,或奇齡之書盛氣叫囂,肆行誹詆,為祖范所不欲觀,故不知先有是說,偶然闇合耶?然如奇齡經說以諸賢配享為多事,而謂學宮祀文昌、魁星為有理,則祖范終無是也。

湯文起,名愈,常熟人,乾隆進士。座主秦文恭公蕙田著《五禮通考》,欲延之參纂,以親老辭歸,歸二年而卒。文起生具慧相,舌端有川字文,好學深思,於經傳古書皆有論說,而其論夏正為最善。以為《夏小正》文雖古雅,而雕琢過甚,不類三代以上之書。且《孟子》「夏后氏五十而貢」,無公田,而經曰「正月初服於公田」,其疑一;《月令》孟春,「昏參中」,而經亦曰「昏參中」,以歲差法推之,中星安得相同,其疑二;《月令》「二月桃始華,五月木堇榮」,而經「五月桃華,二月堇榮」,時物違異,其疑三;《虞書》「仲夏火中」,則六月而流,七月而伏矣,經「五月大火中」,與《虞書》合,而又曰「九月內火」,《大戴禮》以火為大火,則火豈至是始伏,其疑四;疑《月令》而信《小正》,吾未見彼失而此得也。文起卒時,年四十有六。

乾隆壬申,新城陳凝齋大令道奉父命有事於北,歸途聞父訃,匍匐奔喪歸。治喪葬,悉遵古禮,不用浮屠、鼓樂,弔客至,不飲燕。於是鄉里之間皆知喪葬用浮屠者固非,即鼓樂燕客亦非所宜矣。既終葬事,本父遺意,立義田。以為范文正之義田,自高祖以下族之食者百口,故千畝之入,足以均其食。然力能自食者無所需此,不如斟酌其法,變而通之,由始祖以下,以待夫力不能自食者,庶幾君子周急不繼富之義。於是以二千畝為父祭田,自歲供祭祀而外,權其所入以贍族,立為規條。鰥寡孤獨廢疾者有養,力不能婚喪者有贈,有志向學力不能從師者有助,應試乏資斧者行李有資。於是鄉里之間又知贍族有義田之制矣。其諸子復先後增設學田、祭田、小宗義田至七千石。
