| The Master said, "'Assisting are the princes; the son of heaven looks profound and grave |
| 《·》: | 天子适诸侯曰巡狩，巡狩者巡所守也。 |
| When the Son of Heaven visited the princes, it was called a tour of inspection, that is, be surveyed the States under their care. |
| 《·》: | 与天为徒者，知天子之与己皆天之所子，而独以己言蕲乎而人善之，蕲乎而人不善之邪？ |
| When I thus speak of being a co-worker with Heaven, it is because I know that (the sovereign, whom we style) the son of Heaven, and myself, are equally regarded by Heaven as Its sons. And should I then, as if my words were only my own, be seeking to find whether men approved of them, or disapproved of them? |
| 《·》: | 而诸侯咸尊轩辕为天子，代神农氏，是为黄帝。 |
| The princes all agreed that Xuanyuan should be the Emperor in place of Shennong, under the title Huangdi. |
| 《·》: | 为天子削瓜者副之，巾以絺。 |
| He who pares a melon for the son of Heaven should divide it into four parts and then into eight, and cover them with a napkin of fine linen. |
| 《》: | 故立天子，置三公，虽有拱璧以先驷马，不如坐进此道。 |
| Therefore when the sovereign occupies his place as the Son of Heaven, and he has appointed his three ducal ministers, though (a prince) were to send in a round symbol-of-rank large enough to fill both the hands, and that as the precursor of the team of horses (in the court-yard), such an offering would not be equal to (a lesson of) this Dao, which one might present on his knees. |

| ' From the place of the son of Heaven, Came an order to me to march, ' [said the general]. |
| 《·》: | 盖天子之孝也。 |
| This is the filial piety of the Son of Heaven. |
| 《·》: | 尔众士同力王室，尚弼予钦承天子威命。 |
| Unite your strength, all of you warriors, for the royal House. Give me your help, I pray you, reverently to carry out the dread charge of the Son of Heaven. |
| 《·》: | 九三：公用亨于天子，小人弗克 |
| The third NINE, undivided, shows us a feudal prince presenting his offerings to the Son of Heaven. A small man would be unequal (to such a duty). |
| 《·》: | 贵为天子，其利人不厚于正夫。 |
| 《·》: | 昔者纣为天子，将率天下甲兵百万，左饮于淇溪，右饮于洹溪，淇水竭而洹水不流，以与周武王为难。 |
| 《·》: | 天子衣青衣，乘苍龙，服苍玉，建青旗，食麦与羊，服八风水，爨萁燧火。 |
| 《·》: | 《》曰：“匪交匪舒，天子所予。” |
| 《》: | 秋，七月，天王使宰咺来归惠公仲子之賵，缓，且子氏未薨，故名，天子七月而葬，同轨毕至，诸侯五月，同盟至，大夫三月，同位至，士逾月，外姻至，赠死不及尸，吊生不及哀，豫凶事，非礼也。 |
| 《·》: | 周公践天子之位布德施惠，远而逾明，十二牧，方三人，出举远方之民，有饥寒而不得衣食者，有狱讼而失职者，有贤才而不举者，以入告乎天子，天子于其君之朝也，摄而进之曰：“意朕之政教有不得者与！” |
