生平
吳縝生平治學嚴謹，撰寫過《新唐書糾謬》二十卷和《五代史纂誤》三卷，糾正北宋歐陽修《新唐書》與《新五代史》的謬誤。吳縝專著《新唐書糾謬》一書，共舉出該書四百六十條錯誤，臚列《新五代史》謬誤兩百餘事。吳縝在《新唐書糾謬·自序》中指出該書多有「舛駁脫誤」，「揆之前史，皆未有如是者」。
吳縝甚至把《新唐書》中的謬誤，分列為二十門，如：「書事失實」、「事有可疑」、「自相違舛」、「年月時世差誤」、「官爵姓名謬誤」、「紀志表傳不相符合」、「載述脫誤」、「義例不明」、「先後失序」、「編次未當」……等，逐條分類。他還在《自序》中指名批評裴煜、陳薦、文同、吳申、錢藻等五位校稿者，「但循故襲常，唯務喑默」，以致於「訛文謬事，歷歷俱在」，「未聞有所建明 」。
據王明清《揮麈錄》後錄卷二披露，吳氏著二書的本意，原來是要挾怨洩忿。原來嘉祐（1056年—1063年）年間，歐陽文忠諸公正要重修《唐書》。吳縝當時初登第，上書給歐陽修，願為修史效力，言甚懇切，文忠以其年少輕佻拒絕之，吳縝鞅鞅不樂而去。另一種說法是吳縝之父吳師孟被拒，為報父仇。兩種說法自相矛盾，無法成立。今人陳光崇、曾貽芬認為純屬無稽之談。
錢大昕曾批評吳縝的《新唐書糾謬》，於地理、官制、小學多有「未達」，認為吳縝所糾正者，「非無可採」，但吳本人「沾沾自喜，祗欲快其胸臆，則非忠厚長者之道」。
吳縝另著有《朱梁列傳》、《雜錄》，已佚。

Historical Records of the Five Dynasties, both history books by
Ouyang Xiu (Ouyang had several co-authors with
New Book of Tang). As pointed out in the 18th-century
Siku Quanshu, Wu Zhen was "inclined to criticise for the sake of criticism".

Works
Although he apparently wrote other works (including a monograph on the Five Dynasties period Later Liang dynasty), Wu Zhen's only 2 surviving books are:
• Xin Tang Shu Jiumiu (新唐書紏謬; "Correcting Mistakes in the New Book of Tang"), published in 1089, in 20 chapters. It enumerated 400 mistakes of the New Book of Tang.
• Wudai Shiji Zuanwu (五代史記纂誤; "Compendium of Errors in the Historical Records of the Five Dynasties"), published 1090, in 3 chapters, later lost but partly recovered in the 18th century. It enumerated 200 mistakes of the Historical Records of the Five Dynasties, but the recovered version only contained 112.
Both were published after Ouyang Xiu's death in 1072. In the first book's preface, Wu Zhen blasted the New Book of Tang as the worst official history book ever written.
