Early life

Yan Shu was able to compose poems by the age of five and when he was fourteen, he passed the imperial examinations with ease after competing with over a thousand other scholars across the kingdom. During the Ci poem essay composition part of the examination, he informed the examiner that he had previously already worked the problem being asked, and if whether there were any other problems he can do instead. Emperor Zhenzong praised him and bestowed upon him the title of Tong Jin Shi (同進士). The then prime minister Kou Zhun (寇準) expressed that Yan Shu was an outsider from which Emperor Zong replied: 「Was not Zhang Jiuling also an outsider at the time?」

Beginnings of Officialdom

Starting from 1008, Yan Shu served as an assistant to a Guanglushi official and was tasked to edit imperial decrees. He later became an assistant to the Ministry of Ceremonies (Han dynasty) and promoted to become a keeper of the imperial seal. After ascension to becoming an entry-level official (外郎) of the Hu Bu (Ministry of Revenue), he became a close confidant to the crown prince. He also became a scholar of the Hanlin Academy.

生平

晏殊自幼聰穎，七歲能文，十四歲時因宰相張知白推薦，以神童召試，被朝廷賜同進士出身，之後到秘書省做正字，及後累遷太常寺奉禮郎、光祿寺丞等，並成為當時太子趙禎(即後宋仁宗)的太子舍人。

宋仁宗繼位後，進右諫議大夫兼侍讀學士，後官升禮部侍郎知審官院，遷樞密副使。任樞密副使間，曾因發怒以朝笏撞折自己侍從的門牙而被彈劾。

天聖五年（1027年），在以刑部侍郎貶知應天府之時致力興辦書院，即後來四大書院之一的應天府書院，並邀得范仲淹講學，為宋代培養大批人才。

明道元年（1032年），晏殊進參知政事，但翌年便因進諫反對劉太后服天子袞冕謁拜太廟之事被貶知亳州、陳州。五年後被召還任刑部尚書兼御史中丞，並協助北宋平定西夏的進犯。

慶曆二年（1042年），晏殊官拜同中書門下平章事兼樞密使，位同宰相，掌軍政大權。兩年後，卻因編修李宸妃墓誌之事，遭御史孫甫、蔡襄彈劾，仁宗將其貶為工部尚書出知穎州，後又改知陳州、許州、永興軍。

至和元年（1054年）六月，晏殊因病回京診治。翌年正月二十八日病逝，年六十五，贈司空兼侍中，封臨淄公，諡號元獻，世稱晏元獻。仁宗更親自在晏殊的碑文篆寫了「舊學之碑」四個字。

晏殊性剛簡，自奉清儉，好燕飲。能薦拔人才，號稱賢相，王安石、范仲淹、歐陽修均出其門下，他亦培養了不少日後官拜宰相的人才，如韓琦自仁宗始任歷三朝宰相、晏殊女婿富弼後亦官拜宰相。

著作

他生平著作相當豐富，計有文集一百四十卷，多佚散，現存《珠玉詞》一卷傳於世。刪次梁陳以下名臣述作為《集選》一百卷，一說刪並《世說新語》。

晏殊的詞在北宋時期被認為有承先啟後的重要地位。其詞工于造語，多是會友宴遊之作，多以男歡女悅、別緒離情為內容，風格閒雅清婉，詞風和婉明麗，風流蘊藉。其詞集《珠玉詞》共有120多首詞。

晏殊的作品中有不少膾炙人口的名句，如「無可奈何花落去，似曾相識燕歸來」（《浣溪沙》）、「昨夜西風凋碧樹，獨上高樓，望盡天涯路。」（《蝶戀花》）、「紅箋小字，說盡平生意，鴻雁在雲魚在水，惆悵此情難寄」（《清平樂》）、「勸君莫作獨醒人，爛醉花間應有數」（《木蘭花》）、「憑高目斷，鴻雁來時，無限思量」（《訴衷情》）等等，不可勝數。
