The Weiyuan Fort and the Humen Bridge

The history of Humen is linked to the First Opium War (1839–1842). It was at Humen that Lin Zexu supervised the destruction of large quantities of seized opium in 1839. Some major battles in the First Opium War were fought here and on the waters of the Bocca Tigris.

Economy

Humen is a thriving city crowded with consumer goods factories. These factories also fueled population expansion from emigrating workers around the country seeking factory jobs. Furthermore, Humen is geographically advantageous for the factories due to its proximity to two large metropolitan cities and export harbors of Hong Kong and mainland China's Shenzhen. Humen has long been an important gateway to south China. Going upstream, ships plying the Pearl River can reach the eastern, northern and western regions of Guangdong and even parts of Guangxi province. The main port, Humen Port, is a first-class port open to foreign vessels.

Humen is located at the eastern end of the Humen Pearl River Bridge.

Humen is served by regular direct buses traveling south from Guangzhou. Routes continue south by bus to Shenzhen's Window of the World theme park, from which it is possible to continue on to the Hong Kong border by bus or the Shenzhen Metro.

There is a bus service from Humen Town to Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport in Shenzhen. In addition, a ferry service connects Humen Ferry Terminal to Hong Kong International Airport's SkyPier.

名字由來

虎門是象形地名，原指珠江口上大虎、小虎二山對列之水域。大虎、小虎二山，宋朝時稱秀山，又名虎頭山。二山對列水域民間俗稱虎頭門，到清朝初簡稱虎門。《廣州府圖經志》記載:「大虎虎，二山相次，若虎踞之狀，故名虎頭門。」于民國時期成書的《東莞縣誌》記載:「虎頭山，在城西南五十五里大海中，一名秀山，有大、小虎頭二山，俗名虎頭門。」張二果于明崇禎年間成書的《東莞縣誌》稱虎門「二山對列，束隘如門，軒然昂頭，隱若虎踞，潮汐出入，勢甚雄激，南控重溟，為省城門戶」。清康熙二十六年（1687年），虎門駐軍營寨虎頭門寨由阿娘鞋島（威遠島）遷移到石旗嶺（大人山）下。嘉慶十五年（1810年），又在此地建立虎門水師提督署，統管全省三十六營水師。此後，虎門寨城內外水陸之域被統稱為「虎門」。

行政變遷

今虎門所屬區域，在明洪武元年（1368年）屬于東莞縣歸城鄉第七、八、九都，在明洪武四年（1371年）屬缺口司管轄，在民國初期分別屬八區、五區、三區，民國13年（1924年）虎門所屬區改稱十一區。民國27年（1938年）10月，日軍軍隊侵占虎門。民國29年（1940年）5月，東莞縣政府重新建立，虎門劃屬第五區公署。1949年10月，東莞回歸共產黨政權，虎門所屬區域中的太平設為太平市（東莞縣轄市），其他區域隸屬東莞縣第六區。1953年初，土地改革複查，東莞縣劃分15個區。原東莞縣第六區所轄懷德、樹田2個鄉劃屬第九區，小虎鄉劃入第十一區，餘下的鎮洲鄉、赤龍鄉、博湧鄉、北寧鄉、南北面鄉、虎洲鄉、南柵鄉、基寧鄉、白沙鄉設置為第十區。同年，第九區併入第十區。1954年6月30日，東莞縣第十區的塘郎、楊屋2個鄉劃屬東莞縣第三區（後改稱寮步區），基寧、鎮州、南北面等3個鄉劃屬新成立的東莞縣第十一區（後改稱沙田區）。1955年9月，東莞縣第十區改稱虎門區。1957年3月，東莞撤銷區建制，合併成立大鄉，虎門區改為虎門大鄉、北柵大鄉、沙頭大鄉。

1958年9月20日，東莞縣廢除大鄉成立人民公社，虎門大鄉、北柵大鄉、長安大鄉及太平鎮合併成立虎門人民公社。1959年5月30日，太平鎮由虎門人民公社分出，成立太平鎮人民公社。同年8月28日分出長安人民公社。長安人民公社于1960年5月併入虎門人民公社，于1961年7月再從虎門人民公社分出。1960年4月至1961年6月，沙田片區、新沙片區、大洲片區劃屬厚街人民公社。1983年10月，廢除人民公社體制，成立虎門區公所，同時將阿娘鞋島（威遠島）的南面生產大隊、北面生產大隊、九門寨生產大隊、武山沙生產大隊劃歸太平鎮管轄。1985年10月4日，經廣東省人民政府批准，太平鎮和虎門區合併為虎門鎮，實行鎮管村體制。原太平鎮政府駐地改稱太平港，為虎門鎮人民政府所在地。1998年7月8日，經廣東省人民政府批准，撤銷新灣鎮建制，原新灣鎮所屬港灣、向東等10個管理區和新灣居委會劃歸虎門鎮管轄。

2015年，中國國家發改委印發《國家新型城鎮化綜合試點方案》，虎門鎮開展撤鎮設市試點，東莞市賦予虎門鎮縣級管理權限，但不配四套班子，不設街道辦。

歷史衝突

1839年4月，林則徐與鄧廷楨及廣東海關監督豫坤到達虎門，令英美煙販在沙角呈繳鴉片。6月3日，通過海水浸化的方式銷毀收繳的鴉片，事件被稱為「虎門銷煙」。

1841年1月，英國軍隊攻破虎門的沙角炮台和大角炮台。2月，英國軍隊摧毀虎門沿岸防線。1843年，清朝欽差大臣耆英與英國全權公使在虎門簽訂《虎門條約》。
